Five Dutch Words That Made Me Laugh Out Loud

Learning Dutch isn’t just about grammar drills and pronunciation practice — sometimes it’s about stumbling across words that make you spit out your coffee in delight. Here are a few of my favorites so far:

1. Koekje troost (comfort cookie)Yes, it’s real. When life gets tough, the Dutch have an actual word for a cookie that makes you feel better. Honestly, I think this should be international policy.

2. Swaffelen (to hit someone in the face with a penis)I know, I know. But the fact that Dutch has an official word for this act made me laugh for days. It even made Dutch “Word of the Year” in 2008. I can’t help but imagine it as the ultimate slap back to a cranky American “Karen” — though, of course, only in the most metaphorical sense.

3. Uitwaaien (to walk in the wind for relaxation)This one is beautiful. It literally means “to blow out,” but it’s all about taking a walk in the fresh air, often along the beach or through open fields, to clear your head. It’s whimsical, grounding, and so very Dutch.

4. Vlinders in je buik (butterflies in your belly)Sure, we say “butterflies in your stomach” in English, but in Dutch it feels sweeter, almost like your belly itself is a meadow where good things happen.

5. Voorpret (the joy of anticipation)This one is lovely. It describes the happiness you feel before something exciting happens — like the giddy build-up before a vacation, or the buzz of excitement before a friend arrives.

Dutch may have a reputation for sounding harsh, but I’ve found its vocabulary sprinkled with whimsy, cheek, and wit. Every funny word feels like a linguistic treasure — and a reminder that sometimes, the best way to learn a new language is to laugh through it.
